Finding Your Personal Style- part 1

In Decorating, finding your style, Uncategorized on February 14, 2009 at 4:50 pm

With the demise of so many of our favorite decorating magazines, we need to realize that we can be inspired by many things around us, not just pictures of someone else’s space.  Everyone has an innate, internal sense of what they like.  This sense is what you will use to find your own personal style.  Your style may change as you do, learning and growing in experiences.  Each person can pick a favorite color, shapes that they enjoy and a feeling they want to express.  That style is not determined by editors of decorating magazines.  It is only shaped and illuminated by viewing things that set off that internal style button.  The more beautiful things you see, the better chance you will have of fine-tuning your style.

Nature is an example of this.  Before shelter magazines, a trip to the beach, mountains or just a picnic at the park would trigger a person’s style button.  This served as inspiration for decorating their own personal space.  Finding beautiful shells to take home and put in a display jar in the bathroom is not a new thing to home decor.

This idea would carry over to paint color also.  Many of our favorite paint colors are inspired by what we see outside.  Architecture serves as inspiration for interior decoration as well as landscaping.  Flowers, palm trees, bare birch trees in winter; these all serve as inspiration for someone’s personal style.  Start listening to your internal style monitor.  You will begin to tune in to the things that make you feel good and please your eye.  Make a note of the way things make you feel and start translating this to your home decor.  You will find that you have a unique style that is signature to just you!

I would like to add that these photos were taken by my daughter Madeline of things she thought were special.  It was an adventure in finding out  her own personal style .

Had a FUN CAbi show today!

In Fashion, Project Ideas on February 7, 2009 at 2:58 am

I had some of my best girlfriends over today for a CAbi trunk show.  We had lots of girly fun while we tried on clothes and learned about the new spring trends.

Madeline really helped me get ready for the show by making sandwiches, decorating candy and even cleaning up.  It is nice to have such a lovely daughter.  I found many things in the spring line that I wanted to buy, but settled for three skirts and a sweater.  Madeline got a cute skirt from her Mimi who was also at the party enjoying the CAbi clothes.  This is proof that CAbi clothes span the generations!

010We made cute party favors using the Cricut cutter and filled them with hersey’s kisses.  These were very easy to make.

1. you start with a rectangle piece of cardstock

2. glue into a tube

3. glue one end shut and add kisses when dry

4. glue the other end shut the opposite way

5. decorate with Cricut cutouts

014We couldn’t help it, we had to decorate the mini chocolate bars too!  These were a hit with the ladies along with the pink and white m&m’s.  Of course the CAbi clothes were the best this season.  You can check them out here. – Find out your style by taking this fun quiz.

Ethan Allen has a new look, new website and some great resources online!  I have always liked EA, especially in my English Country/Traditional decorating phase.  They have some great eco-friendly options and seem to have jumped into the game with a great new look.  One of the features I liked on the site was the style quiz.   It got me right on the nose.  Hollywood Glamour!  They said I also might like Estate style- never heard of it, but I liked it all the same. – Ethan Allen | furniture | interior design | style quiz.

Ethan allen is doing the furniture for the HGTV dream home 2009.  This should get them the advertizing they need to get back into furniture/design arena and attract the next generation.  Go check out the site to see all they are offering.  It is very enjoyable.
